Search Tazewell Facility Releases

To find someone released from the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Tazewell Facility, first decide whether the person returned to the community or moved to another custodian. Tazewell County jail releases can follow bond, a court order, time served, or sentence completion. A name can also leave the local roster after a transfer. The regional jail record, Virginia custody notification system, and court record answer different parts of the search. State and federal systems apply only when authority changed.

Tazewell Facility Release Outcomes

The Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority, or SWVRJA, operates Tazewell County's regional adult jail. Its public roster is expressly for current facility inmates. When a card disappears, the roster shows only that the person is no longer returned by that current-custody search. It does not state that the person walked out to the community. The actual release event is held in the regional authority's record.

Several outcomes can follow a Tazewell Facility exit. Bond, recognizance, dismissal, time served, or sentence expiration may end that local custody episode. The person could instead move to another SWVRJA building, a Virginia Department of Corrections institution, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. A data delay can also change what the public interface shows. The disposition and receiving destination, when releasable, separate community release from continued custody. Each named custodian should be checked through its own official record system.

Confirm a Tazewell Jail Release

Use the authority's Current Facility Inmates page only to test present listing status. Save the exact name used and the time of the check. Then use Virginia VINE to inspect the reported custody event and facility. Event wording matters. A transfer alert points to continued custody, while a release alert still benefits from facility confirmation when the destination is important.

Next review the Tazewell General District Court case and, when a felony advanced, the Circuit Court case. A bond order, dismissal, sentence, or final order can identify legal authority for the change. It does not prove the precise time the jail completed its checks and opened the door. Virginia's local-jail standard requires positive identification, verified release authority, and a check for other-jurisdiction holds before release.

  1. Check the SWVRJA current roster and record the time checked.
  2. Search the same person and facility in Virginia VINE. Read the event label, not just the alert time.
  3. Review each relevant Tazewell court case for bond, dismissal, sentence, or other release authority.
  4. Call the Tazewell Facility for a narrow distinction between community release and transfer.
  5. Request the existing release event when written proof or an exact time is needed.

A missing current-roster card is a clue. An affirmative, dated release or transfer record is proof of what happened.

Tazewell Facility Release Records

A focused request should ask for an existing record, not a new narrative. Identify the full booked name, approximate booking interval, date of birth, or booking number if known. Ask for electronic copies of the booking and custody-event record, including actual release date and time, disposition or reason, legal authority, and the receiving agency or destination for a transfer when public. A routine adult initial booking photograph may also be requested.

Send the request to SWVRJA's named records custodian. Virginia FOIA allows a request by mail, fax, email, phone, or in person, though writing makes the scope easier to preserve. The authority generally must respond within five working days. It may produce records, redact or withhold parts with a legal basis, report that a record cannot be found, or invoke seven additional working days in writing when the response is impracticable within the first period.

Reasonable charges may cover actual search, retrieval, duplication, and supply costs. No fixed SWVRJA release-record fee appears on the public page. Ask for an estimate before work begins. A deposit can be required if estimated charges exceed $200. No official public retention period for the release event is published, so ask whether the identified record still exists rather than promising a set archive.

Note: Request a cost estimate and ask whether the specific event still exists because no fixed fee or retention term is published.

Tazewell Jail Contact Details

The facility contact is useful for a prompt status distinction, while the FOIA custodian handles a documentary request. Staff may limit what they disclose by phone. Keep the question narrow: did the person leave the Tazewell Facility, and was the recorded outcome community release or transfer? The full Tazewell County released inmate search explains how court, VINE, state, and federal records fit around that answer.

The authority does not publish release-processing hours. Do not assume a court action and physical exit share a timestamp. A local court record may show why release was authorized, but SWVRJA's custody log supplies the actual event. The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office holds sheriff arrest or incident records, while SWVRJA operates confinement records. Direct jail release and intake-photo requests to SWVRJA first unless another booking agency created the sought image.

Tazewell Jail History and Releases

Tazewell's jail history can mislead a current release search. A state report from 2012 says the facility was substantially completed on April 10, 2000, and that Tazewell joined SWVRJA on July 1, 2005. That report described a pretrial and work-release emphasis. It remains useful history, but it does not define the jail's present program status.

The 2025 state certification record uses the name Tazewell Adult Detention Center, found no deficiencies, and awarded unconditional certification. It marked the reviewed work-release and furlough standards non-applicable. Current copy should follow that newer evidence rather than carry the older program description forward as a present fact.

The official SWVRJA contact page also calls the site the Tazewell Facility. Both names refer to the same regional jail at Court Street. Neither name creates a separate Tazewell County Sheriff roster or a released-person archive. The operating authority remains the key custodian for the local jail exit record.

The SWVRJA contact page shows the authority's current name and contact route for the Tazewell location.

Tazewell Pretrial Release Monitoring

Release on bond does not always mean release without conditions. Clinch Valley Community Action Judicial Services works with Tazewell's Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts. Its Community Safety Program can monitor eligible pretrial defendants, including through electronic monitoring. That status means the person is out of jail while the case remains pending. It is not acquittal, sentence discharge, or proof that every case has ended.

Confirm the legal terms through the bond order and current court information. Confirm the physical jail exit through SWVRJA. These records can bear different dates because the court authorizes the release while jail staff execute it after required identity, authority, and hold checks. Label both events accurately if both are cited.

Bond
A court-authorized pretrial release subject to stated terms.
Discharge
An end to the identified custody or correctional authority, as the record specifies.
Transfer
A move to another custodian while custody continues.
Detainer
A request or hold that may affect release timing or destination.

ICE Handoffs After Tazewell Release

An immigration detainer can change a Tazewell jail exit into another agency's intake. ICE describes a detainer as a request for advance notice and up to 48 additional hours for the Department of Homeland Security to assume custody. The request itself does not prove that ICE accepted custody. Obtain the SWVRJA disposition and check the ICE Online Detainee Locator System when an immigration handoff is reported.

ICE's locator can include some people released from ICE custody during the prior 60 days. That creates two distinct events: release from SWVRJA to ICE, followed later by release from ICE if that occurred. Do not merge those dates or call the first one community return. Exact biographical information or an A-number improves the ICE search, and delayed or omitted records remain possible under the locator's rules.

Federal custody needs a different route. A federal pretrial detainee may occupy a rented local bed under U.S. Marshals Service authority and have no Bureau of Prisons result. Use the federal court order and holding path for that stage. The BOP locator applies after a sentenced person enters BOP custody. “Not in BOP Custody” rules out only BOP custody, not another jail or supervised release.

Note: Record the releasing and receiving agencies separately whenever a Tazewell jail exit may be a federal or immigration handoff.
