Pocahontas Prison Release Outcomes

Pocahontas State Correctional Center is a Virginia Department of Corrections institution in Tazewell County. It is not the county jail. Its custody record belongs to VADOC, and its release framework applies to sentenced state prisoners. The Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority roster cannot confirm whether a person left Pocahontas, moved to a different state prison, or entered community supervision.

A person who satisfies the state sentence may be discharged or released on parole or probation under the applicable documents. A transfer to another VADOC institution remains state custody. A locator result at a probation and parole district can support that the person is outside prison under community supervision. Full disappearance from the locator is inconclusive because the public tool describes current custody and supervision, not a permanent archive of every completed discharge.

Search Pocahontas Release Status

Open the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. Search with a seven-digit DOC ID when available because it reduces confusion between similar names. A name search needs at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range. Accept the portal disclaimer, then compare all displayed identifiers.

Read the location before describing status. Pocahontas or another institution means current state custody. A local or regional jail result under VADOC authority can mean the person is physically local while the state remains responsible. A district-office result can mean the person has left prison and is under community supervision. VADOC says the locator is updated daily and may be inaccurate or outdated, so preserve the date of the search.

1. Search by DOC ID, or enter the required name fields and useful filters.
2. Match the identity and read the current location or supervision office.
3. Record the exact label for any future release-date field and the date checked.
4. Use signed release papers or a VADOC records response to confirm an event that already occurred.

Note: A no-result can reflect spelling, delay, local-only custody, or completed state authority, so it is not release proof by itself.

Pocahontas Projected Release Dates

A projected release date is forward-looking. VADOC Operating Procedure 010.3 uses that term and permits staff to confirm the value at the time of inquiry. It is not the same as an actual event. The calculation can change because of the offense date, active and suspended terms, jail credit, concurrent or consecutive sentences, earned-credit class, program participation, discipline, forfeited or restored credit, warrants, detainers, later court orders, and administrative correction.

VADOC calculates an Earned Sentence Credit date when qualifying active time exceeds twelve months. Good Conduct Allowance generally relates to older felony terms and older misdemeanor terms, while Earned Sentence Credits generally apply to post-1994 felony offenses. Restricted-rate ESC-1 terms can earn up to 4.5 days per 30 served. Other statutorily eligible ESC-2 terms can earn up to 15 days per 30 depending on classification and eligibility.

Confirm a Pocahontas Release

VADOC describes a completed state release through documents and execution. The person receives a notification-of-release letter. On release day, the person reads or is read the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. Both the person and a witness sign and date the papers. State policy says discharge or parole release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting.

Those dated records distinguish an event from a forecast. If the locator moves from Pocahontas to District 43 or another district, that supports community supervision, but the assigned district must be verified. Tazewell residence or case origin alone does not prove District 43 holds the file. When certainty matters, request the release letter, signed order or conditions, actual date, and release type from the institution or VADOC office maintaining the record.

Projected date

The current estimate if the computation remains unchanged.

Parole

Conditional community release for an eligible prison term after Board and VADOC action.

Probation

Court-ordered community supervision, which is distinct from parole.

Discharge

The end of the identified authority as shown by the official record.

Pocahontas Parole Release Records

The Virginia Parole Board decides parole matters for eligible terms. VADOC executes an approved release and administers community supervision. Those roles must not be combined. A Board monthly report marked Grant establishes a favorable decision, not physical departure from Pocahontas. Under § 53.1-136, VADOC sets the execution date after notification, generally no sooner than 30 business days except in specified circumstances.

Search the Board's monthly PDF by name or DOC number and preserve the decision and certification dates. Then check the VADOC locator. If the person remains at Pocahontas, describe the record as “parole granted; release not yet independently confirmed.” After execution, signed Conditions of Parole and the assigned supervision office identify the next legal status. For final discharge from supervision, seek the specific discharge record rather than infer completion from a vanished locator result.

Virginia generally ended ordinary discretionary parole for felonies committed on or after January 1, 1995, subject to defined statutory exceptions. Older and otherwise eligible terms may still reach the Board. Probation can apply even when discretionary parole does not. Eligibility never guarantees a grant, and a grant never proves the prison gate event has happened.

Pocahontas Release Records Contact

Send a focused record request to the manager, warden, superintendent, or chief of the office maintaining the record. Identify the person by full name, date of birth, and seven-digit DOC ID. Ask for the existing release or discharge record, actual date and type, notification letter, signed Order of Release or conditions if publicly releasable, and an identifying photograph only if it is releasable. Do not ask the agency to calculate a new date or create a narrative.

VADOC inmate and supervision files contain exemptions, so a narrow request is more useful than a demand for the whole file. Procedure 050.6 includes an inactive-offender records process, but disclosure and redaction depend on the particular record and law. A county booking photo normally belongs to the booking jail, not Pocahontas. The VADOC institutional identification image is a different record.

Pocahontas Release and ICE Boundaries

Pocahontas is the only current state prison identified in Tazewell County's facility map. The closed Tazewell Correctional Unit #31 must not be treated as an active facility. There is also no identified current BOP prison or ICE detention center in the county. A federal or immigration case may still touch local custody, but the state-prison locator does not answer those systems.

For a sentenced federal prisoner, use the Bureau of Prisons locator. A “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” result addresses BOP custody only. Federal supervised release or another custodian can continue. For an ICE handoff, use the jail disposition and ICE locator. A detainer request is not proof that the transfer happened, and an ICE release can occur on a date different from release by the prior jail.

The core distinction is simple: Pocahontas release records belong to VADOC; Tazewell local-jail release records belong to SWVRJA; federal and immigration records belong to their own custodians. Naming the responsible system prevents a transfer from being mistaken for freedom and prevents a projected date from being reported as an event.
